Seasons of the St. Mary's River

The world famous St. Mary's River is special because it has so many seasons and species available throughout the year. From acrobatic Atlantic Salmon to explosive Steelhead, this river has it all. Here at Soo North Fly Shop, we totally understand this river and when some of the best fishing can be had. The following is a list of the species available in the river and approximate times they are available. What is great is that there is much overlap in species runs - you can cast for Pink Salmon and hook into a Steelhead! We recommend you call us to discuss what is best for you based on species and time of year.

Atlantic Salmon

Many do not know that there are large runs of Atlantic Salmon that come into the St. Mary's River. These incredible sportfish come readily to the fly from mid-June thru to November. Great species to spey fish for or even use traditional fly fishing methods. We also take people out in our boat to catch them with streamers - this is some of the most explosive and exciting fishing to be had! Good times for this type of salmon fishing are July thru to mid-August. Call for more information on current conditions and to book a trip.

Coho & Chinook Salmon

These great fish are very popular with anglers. The Chinooks run from last week of August thru to end of October. Coho Salmon usually run from mid-October to December. All will readily come to a fly if presented right. Can be caught on either spey or traditional fly rods. Call for latest conditions.

Pink Salmon

Traditionally the Pink Salmon arrive in the river between end of August and run until the end of September. Depending upon the year-class, they will vary in size from 1 1/2lbs to 5lbs. Great sport on a fly rod in the 5-6 weight size.

Steelhead

This is one of the best places in the Great Lakes to catch Steelhead. Steelhead here are wild, there is no stocking program! Average fish run 5-7 lbs but much larger specimens are caught all the time. These great fighting fish can be caught year round but there are specific windows with the best opportunities to catch them on a fly. Call to find out about the current runs and conditions.
